Rural Aspirations Project
Expanding Educational Opportunities in Rural Maine
Islesboro Central School
The Pathways Program at Islesboro Central School is a great example of what personalized learning can look like at a rural schools. Rural Aspirations worked with the ICS High School staff to create the systems and structures to support this program in 2016. Each student has a Pathways block within their schedule, and an opportunity to create their own learning experiences based on their interests and aspirations. Students can design internships, courses, or a series of experiences that help them explore and understand a particular topic or skill of interest. Students develop these plans with the assistance of ICS faculty, their parents and local community members during their annual Design Team meeting where students voice their aspirations, reflect on their academic experiences, select upcoming courses and design their Pathways experiences.
